For children whose seizures persist despite medication and whose brains appear unremarkable on standard scans, the search for a surgical solution has long been hampered by the limits of what imaging could reveal. A study of 79 young patients in Italy suggests that combining metabolic and structural brain imaging in a single session — PET/MRI — can illuminate what conventional scans leave in shadow, offering families and clinicians a more honest map of the brain and, for many children, a credible path toward freedom from seizures.
