A 21-year study following 759 young people in Augusta, Georgia, found that unexplained drops in resting heart rate during childhood and adolescence — far from being benign — may foreshadow enlarged heart chambers, elevated blood pressure, and eventual heart failure in adulthood. The heart, it seems, sometimes grows quieter not out of strength, but out of strain, and learning to tell the difference may be one of medicine's more consequential challenges.
